Summer 2022 Fashion Trends Give Off That Early 2000s Vibe

Vaxed Girl Summer Season 2 is about to hit, and trust me when I tell you that the upcoming trends reflect that mood. leggings? Canceled. Tracksuit? Never heard of her. Fuzzy socks? See you in October. Summer 2022 is synonymous with extra strong dressing with details that make you vibrate.

Low-rise jeans flaunting the pelvis, loose knit crochet, corsets emphasizing the cleavage and fiery shades of fuchsia are among the spicy trends about to wash over summer 2022. Even the shoes are hot – dad’s sneakers take a break in favor of angular lucite wedges, stiletto flip-flops and strappy platforms that will elevate your foot shots.

Don’t get me wrong, though – that comfy, oversized look from 1999 will always reign supreme. But, as spotted at Coachella, you’ll soon start to balance it out with form-fitting details appropriate for a (literally) steamy night out.

Although we are still a few months away from reality the season, the time for shorts and crop tops is coming fast – and my suggestion is to get shopping as soon as possible.

We only include products that have been independently selected by Bustle’s editorial team. However, we may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

If you’ve resisted the resurgence of the about-face for so long, you have my respect, but it’s time to give in, my friend. With design details like stiletto heels, platform soles and puffy straps, the ‘ugly’ shoe trend of the 2000s is officially cute. At this point, resistance is futile.

Electric Fuchsia

Before Valentino’s all-pink show, there was Kim Kardashian wears electric pink exclusively for a week straight. The impact is clear, as the fiery hue now appears in virtually every summer collection. For the first time in my old life as an emo-kid, I’m considering wearing fuchsia – it’s how hard this trend hits.

Rihanna has spoken: low rise jeans are back. And who are we to contradict the queen? Pocketless flares are back in stores, but if you really want authentic retro look, modern designs are also available. Baggy styles — those that hit just below the navel — approach the trend in a less revealing way.

polo shirts

A cornerstone of the dark college aesthetic (yes, another aesthetic), the polo shirts of yesteryear are back. Unlike their first moment, the button-up style is incredibly versatile this time around. A terrycloth texture gives that coconut girl look, while an oversized black option offers a bit of pop-punk energy.

Platforms

This summer, you’ll be in a hurry to find a pair of sandals that don’t have an extra 2 to 3 inches added to their base. Gladiators, flip flops, sliders, fisherman sandals, clogs – every shoe style gets the platform treatment.

Bright tropical prints

For the second time in this story, I’ll be talking about Coconut Girls – only because the starter pack encompasses a lot of summer staples. Early 2000s Hawaiian prints are a big part of the aesthetic, but the vibe is accessible to everyone. Wear the print with jeans or sleek high heels for a more grown-up look.

Corsets

This summer, we show our cleavage without shame, OK?! Bridgerton completely normalized this boob-centric trend, skyrocketing the already popular lingerie-inspired aesthetic to one of ’22’s *hottest* styles.

Cardi B, Rihanna, Hailey Baldwin, Billie Eilish, literally all the Kardashian sisters — I could go on for days listing the celebs who go from gold chains to silver sequins. Kourtney, in particular, can’t resist wearing a cross necklace reminiscent of Ed Hardy’s 2009 takeover.

After years of precarious stilettos and toe-pinching pumps, elevated wedges are about to be your “best friend” (Doja Cat joke). The chunky sole provides Hot Girl comfort with that nostalgic college dance look we all crave.

Crochet

A more summery trend not found. A mix of rainbow colors, combined with whimsical crochet styles, give this aesthetic the most beachy feel possible.

Y2K Butterfly Tops

Dua Lipa can be credited with starting this trend, relentlessly wearing butterfly designs until the rest of us finally adapted. Thank goodness she did, because the strappy halter design is a cutting-edge festival style.
