The year 2000 sweeps catwalk and fast fashion trends simultaneously – Sourcing Journal

The biggest trend story of 2022 might be fashion from two decades ago.

Y2K, the futuristic pop star-inspired fashion of the early 2000s, ranked No. 3 on Tagwalk’s Global Trends list for F/W 22-23. The fashion search platform tagged “2000s” for 336 looks, including Y2K crop tops from Aniye Records, bodycon dresses from Collina Strada and Marine Serre’s version of the “Penny Lane” coat, which belongs to both the 70s and 2000s.

“While some designers gave us a glimpse of the future, referencing the metaverse and space-age dressing, many were still looking to the past, reliving the glory days of the Y2K era,” Edited said. .

In some cases, the style and color references are specific to pop culture moments. “Polly Pocket pink” and baby blue washed patterns from Blumarine and 16 Arlington, while Coperni was among those channeling “Euphoria” with crop tops, low rises and cutouts, Edited added.

Indeed, “Euphoria” caught the attention of Gen Z and TikTok users. The hashtag “euphoriaoutfit” has 58.4 million views on the video platform. The controversial HBO high school drama was recently named the most inspiring TV show for viewers’ makeup looks and fashion choices by marketing research firm Uswitch, which analyzed Google search data from the past 12 months.

In the first two weeks of February, fashion search platform Lyst reported that searches for “cut-out dresses,” a style frequently worn by “Euphoria” actress Alexa Demie’s character Maddy Perez, increased by 42% and searches for cropped cardigans increased by 18%.

The runway influence is evident in H&M’s new studio collection for spring. Studded denim miniskirts, jeans with corset lacing and rhinestone-embellished cutout dresses are among the daring looks featured in the fast fashion retailer’s premium line.

“There’s a new vibe of exuberance in the air that makes us all want to dress up in fabulous clothes again. It’s reminiscent of the va-va-voom spirit that defined fashion from the 1980s through early 2000s,” said Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M.

While the Y2K trend is already embraced by retailers across all market sectors, Edited said the 2000s revival shows no signs of slowing down. Despite appeals from plus-size-loving millennials, low-rise jeans were central to Diesel’s debut at Milan Fashion Week, and they’ve already been copied by trendsetters like Dua Lipa and Julia Fox. Connor Ives cut the belts for a sexy, undone look, while Christian Siriano went ultra low with a pair of patchwork jeans for Gloria Vanderbilt.

While low-rise jeans are a hallmark of the year 2000, another signature silhouette comes into play: the low-rise miniskirt. “Micro miniskirts were a heroic piece at Versace and Christian Cowan,” Edited said. Leather, ombré and fur-trimmed miniskirts featured in 16 Arlington’s collection. Blumarine added tiers of ruffles and cutouts to the miniskirts.

The miniskirt was the centerpiece of the Miu Miu collection for a second consecutive season. The white low-rise miniskirts were part of the brand’s tennis-inspired collection. The style was also interpreted in black leather.

Meanwhile, ultra-low-rise, ultra-cropped pleated miniskirts from the brand’s S/S 2022 collection were the magazine’s must-have cover look in 2022. Nicole Kidman wore the Miu Miu skirt and bra top- matching throat in Vanity Fair’s Hollywood issue. Zendaya wore it in an op-ed for Interview Magazine. Paloma Elsesser wore Miu Miu’s chopped skirt and sweater on the cover of iD.

During the week of February 23, the week the Elsesser cover came out, Lyst documented 900 searches per day on its platform for Miu Miu skirts. In fact, demand for miniskirts on Lyst is at its highest level in three years.

The crazy side of the year 2000 is also revealed through colored furs and rhinestone ornaments. David Koma adorned models in crystal-embellished rugby shirts and racing striped dresses, while MSGM and Patbo applied crystals to baggy jeans.

The trends of the 2000s are already having an impact in retail. Edited reported that arrivals of dazzling tops were up 313% year over year, thanks in part to fast fashion retailers like Shein and Zara offering a variety of outlet tops. Lulus’ embellished dresses contributed to the style’s overall 364% growth. The blingy look is also set to dazzle in the accessories and footwear categories this year.
