Why I Still Wear My Mom’s 80s Clothes

“I really like working different eras together to create outfits that really look like me.”

It’s probably no surprise to anyone that vintage fashion has indeed made a comeback. Maybe it’s your friend who still wears her mother’s second-hand leather jacket or your colleague whose boots were found by chance at their local ops store – either way, vintage styles are all around. from U.S.

It almost became a pride to answer “Where did you get that?” with an offhand shrug and an offhand comment that you found it mindlessly browsing the aisles of your local Vinnies (or your parents’ closet).

For a growing number of consumers, the days of impulse buying fast fashion made overseas with environmentally degrading materials are over. Now these buyers are more concerned about locally made sustainable items and materials and prioritize timeless pieces that they can take with them over the years.

Another vintage clothing drawcard is the sentimentality it evokes; there is something special about the past lives of a pre-loved garment. Australian heritage brand Country Road knows this all too well.

First released in 1984 as part of the brand’s first-ever menswear collection, the brand’s Chambray shirt epitomizes classic ’80s style with its unisex oversized fit and denim wash. The re-released shirt is also part of the brand’s efforts to expand its range of Australian-grown and made-in-Australia items, putting local manufacturing and responsibly sourced materials at the forefront of its ethos.

With a personal style that already pays homage to 60s-90s fashion, Steph Lane, content creator and co-founder of the vintage furniture company Goodspace, has the talent to combine modern and vintage pieces. Whether it’s classic jeans or a well-tailored shirt, Steph’s love for vintage fashion drives her to incorporate timeless pieces into her everyday outfits.

Still, why go shopping if you can rummage through a family member’s wardrobe? This week, Steph created a week of outfits using Country Road’s timeless Chambray shirt with vintage pieces from her mom’s wardrobe, showing the many ways retro and modern styles complement each other. Below, she shares a look at her style.

How do you define your personal style?

My personal style is a mix of vintage and modern. I love everything from the 60s to the 80s and 90s. I really enjoy working with different eras together to create outfits that really look like me.

What does timeless fashion mean to you?

For me, timeless fashion is all about classic, simple, must-have pieces – items that can be worn and reworked to go with any style. Think great jeans, oversized jackets, well-tailored shirts and tailored pants.

What’s your mom’s favorite piece from the 80s?

My favorite piece would have to be his vintage suede blazer. It’s timeless, comfy, and super cute with so many different outfits.

What are your tips for pairing a vintage piece with a modern outfit?

My advice would be to pair and style your modern outfits with the era the vintage pieces belong to. I will often wear a high waisted mini skirt with a vintage jacket for a 60s vibe, or an oversized sweater with bike shorts for more of a kick. 80s Princess Diana Energy.

What are your wardrobe essentials?

I can’t pass up some nice vintage jeans or a well cut vintage blazer. I also love the classic oversized look of my Chambray Shirt – it goes with so many different looks and can be styled super casual or dressed up with a skirt for a more polished look.
